Thor Halvorssen is the founder of the Human Rights Foundation, a nonprofit that internationally champions human rights through peoples rights to self-determination and freedom from tyranny. Halvorssen founded the foundation in New York in 2005 and its international council has on it people that have been held as prisoners of conscience such as Harry Wu and Vladimir bukovsky. Thor is also a film producer with some films under his belt and others in stages of development.
Thor Halvorssen got his start in fighting for human rights during the 1989 London opposition to apartheid in South Africa. He first rose to prominence in these issues when he led an appeal to not use Chinese slave labor while at Lucent Technologies annual shareholder meeting in 1999. He went on that year to become the first Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. This foundation fights to defend and sustain the rights of college students in the United States.
Halvorssen also founded the Oslo Freedom Forum in 1999, which continues to hold its annual conference there today. Attended by people across the globe, the goal of the conference is to bring together such people as former heads of state, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and others in order to exchange ideas about human rights and expose ongoing abuses of power.
Thor has produced or co-produced a number of films. Among these are The Sugar Babies, which is a documentary about the trafficking of humans in the Dominican Republican. Another documentary he produced is Hammer & Tickle which used humor to get at the evil truth of Soviet tyranny. He was a co-producer on Freedom’s Fury, which told the story of the 1956 uprising against the Hungarian dictatorship. Thor Halverssen is currently working on a film adaption of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. The book, written by Robert A. Heinlein, is about the residents of the moon rising up against the dictatorship on Earth that controls them.
